25 Under $25

With the price of just about everything going up these days, we here at Wine Street have been working extra hard to find wines that offer the most quality for every dollar spent. Bang-for-the-buck wines, overachievers, whatever you want to call them, these are screaming good values that offer serious quality without the serious price!

WELL-PRICED WHITE WINES

Villa Folini 2006 Pinot Grigio  -- $9.99   Fresh cut melon, lemon drop, a hint of brown spice and quite a bit more depth than we usually see in Pinot Grigio at this price point. Not your typical watery, dilute, Pinot Grigio, this has some substance and character to it. Ridiculous quality for a wine under 10 bucks!

Kung Fu Girl 2006 Riesling -- $9.99  We thought this was a very good wine when it sold for $13.99. When the distributor slashed the price to move the last few cases, we thought we’d pass this ridiculously good deal on to you! Crisp and zingy with notes of green apple and lemon. This comes off as just-barely off-dry, and the perfect refresher for hot weather.

Guy Allion Sauvignon Blanc 2007 Théséé $12.99  Precise, clean and full-flavored, this Sauv. Blanc shows a vibrant nose of honeysuckle, gooseberry and melon. (No cat’s pee here!)  Rich and full in the mouth with a racy, big finish of honeydew melon, more gooseberry, and a hint of lemongrass.  Perfect summer sipper and pairs well with shellfish, whitefish, goat cheese, chips and guacamole.  This is a stunning wine for the money.

Benteveo (Viña Cobos) 2006 Chardonnay  -- $17.99   This is one of the best deals we’ve seen in a long time! At the very last minute, Paul Hobbs declassified his $50+  Bramare Chard into this great value. Rich and opulent, with notes of tropical fruit, crème brulée and toasted brioche.

Dog Point 2007 Sauvignon Blanc  -- $18.99    World-class Sauv. Blanc from the former winemaker & viticulturalist for Cloudy Bay .  Elegant and layered, with notes of gooseberry, passionfruit Much more subtle and lovely than your standard issue New Zealand Sauv. Blanc.

Prà  2007 Soave Classico  Italy -- $13.99  100% Garganega grape showing apricot, pineapple, ripe peach and honey in a medium-bodied package with a velvety smooth feel and just a whisper of paraffin and almond skin on the finish. The Prà Brothers, Sergio and Graziano, run one of the top estates of Soave and make some of the very best versions of the Garganega grape.

Prà 2007 Staforte Soave Classico , Italy --  $24.99   Singular and stunning. A nose of white flowers and stone fruit, followed by an intense nuttiness on the palate. Incredibly lovely texture, silky in the mouth then a streak of very firm mineral that lasts and lasts. Incredible depth without being heavy. This is done entirely in stainless steel and spends 6 months on the lees with frequent batonnage (lees stirring), showing off the stellar quality of the fruit and the terroir.

Bang-for-the-Buck RedS

Mil Piedras  2005 Cabernet Sauvignon  Argentina -- $9.99   We continue to be amazed by what you can get for Ten Bucks from Argentina ! This is a very solid Cab, with a touch of violets on the nose followed by notes of blue fruits, light, judicious use of oak, and smooth & supple tannins. An excellent value, and it’s nice to see that our dollars are still worth something somewhere!

Kitfox 2005 Syrah “Chloe’s Vyd”  Salado Creek, California  -- $9.99  We don’t often see single vineyard Syrah—or single vineyard anything—at such a great price!  This is muscular, meaty and dark, with dusty blackberry and rich, dense notes of black raspberry and toasty oak. Salado Creek is at the northern end of the San Joaquin Valley in Stanislaus County , just south and east of the Bay area, and based on this wine, is an area worth keeping an eye on!

Stephen Vincent 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon California -- $10.99  This is a “dead ringer” for solid Cabernet that is well priced.  Rich, full flavored  with generous black currant and black plum fruit, hints of mocha, leather and toast.   We looked at this new release and thought it would be too young for consumption but it is not.  This is drinking great right now with just a few minutes in the glass.  Another Excellent Value from Stephen Vincent!

Altos de la Hoya 2006 Monastrell -- $11.99  On the nose this shows cedar, spice box and sandalwood in a way that’s a bit reminiscent of traditionally made Rioja. On the palate it’s juicy and forward, with ripe berry, hints of chocolate and toasty oak. The oldest Monastrell (Mourvédre) vines in this vineyard were planted in 1872 and are some of the very few that escaped the phylloxera epidemic that wiped out most of the vineyards of Europe .

Hares Chase 2005 Red   Barossa Valley -- $14.99    Well-structured, good complexity with notes of red currants, blackberries, leather, spice, and cedar with a long, rich finish.   Robert Parker calls this "a no-brainer" with 89 Points.

Peter Paul  2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley   -- $15.99   Plush and lush, with lots of ripe currant and cherry, smooth tannins, hints of chocolate and toasty oak. From the people who brought you the Grove Street wines, this is a lot of Cab for not a lot of money!  A crowd-pleasing style that’s bound to be the hit of the party!  This is a steal.

Triennes  2004 St. Auguste  Cab. Sauvignon/Syrah/Merlot Vin de Pays du Var, France -- $15.99   This estate in the Var region of Provence was founded by two of the most revered men in Burgundy : Jacques Seysses, the founder of Domaine Dujac, and Aubert de Villaine, the co-owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. This is the estate’s flagship wine: a fragrant blend of Cab, Merlot & Syrah that offers up currant, red berry, sweet loam, rocky mineral notes with impeccable balance and structure.

O’Reilly’s 2007 Pinot Noir -- $15.99    A Wine Street favorite is back! The ever-reliable Dave O’Reilly (winemaker for Owen Roe) has done it again, with another vintage of lovely, budget-conscious, Oregon Pinot.  Cranberry, raspberry , hints of cherry.  Excellent Pinot !

Saint Cosme 2006 Les Deux Albion -- $19.99   A full-throttle  Cotes -du - Rhone , with beautiful purity, power and persistence. Blackberry compote, licorice, and bacon fat, with hints of thyme, lavender, and rosemary.  If this doesn’t knock your socks off we don’t know what will!

Lagarto (Viña Cobos) 2006 Merlot -- $17.99    Stylish, plush, high-altitude Merlot from the very talented Paul Hobbs. Silky texture, with notes of plum, blackberry and clove followed by a hint of graphite. Delicious, and a bargain when you think about what most Paul Hobbs wines cost these days!

Four Vines 2006 "Maverick” Zinfandel -- $21.99   More of what we've come to expect from the Maverick. Rich and chewy with ripe blackberry, dusty berry, hints of thyme and baking spice. Previous vintages of this wine received 91 &  92 pts Wine Spectator. This will sell out before the score hits the press!

These are just a few of the many, many value wines we have in the shop.
